Epistemology / Meta: Introduction

Meta-Episte

Although this section regards epistemology, metaphysics must be discussed as it is the foundation of absolutely everything we think about and discuss. In fact we can call metaphysics and epistemology intimately connected (Dictionary.com, 2011). Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy which asks what is real. It deals with first principles; cause and effect. What is being? What is knowing?

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy which asks how do we know? What do we know? How do we know if what we believe is true? Do we have to justify what we believe and is justification enough. Simply put; epistemology is the theory of knowledge. I am intrigued by this topic and hope that you will be as well. In fact it is important to at least have a small interest in this topic as "knowing" benefits society at large.

We live in a world with social as well as physical (material) dimensions (Baggott, 2005). As a society, we accept some type of reality and create rituals and and values to make meaning in our lives. Then the cultural, social and economic capitalists make rules, policies and tell us what we should value so that our values are systematic in nature. This means that we live day to day valuing other people's values and realities which helps cultural, social and economic capitalists maintain social order. In 1973 Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron used the term cultural capital in their book "Cultural Reproduction and Social Reproduction." Pierre Bordieu distinguishes between economic, social and cultural capital in 1986 (Wikipedia, 2012).
